Lakewood began in 1889 when two settlers platted a 13 block area in eastern Jefferson County. The area had no municipal government until 1969, instead relying on water and fire districts and county government. The town stayed small with very little growth until it was incorporated in 1969. The population grew quickly. Commercial and business entities began to emerge in Lakewood and the city began to take shape. Today, the city keeps a watchful eye on the city and takes the necessary steps to keep a fresh face on the community and an economic engine to keep rolling. In 2011, Lakewood was named an All American City for the first time.
